My name is Connor, I am 19 years old and moving into an SDA apartment soon. My disability is Friederichs Ataxia, which is a progressive condition. Having to keep going over with the NDIA how disabled I am and why I need this type of accommodation, has impacted my mental health.

I waited 2 years to get the funding I requested.  I asked to live on my own, or with people I chose, in an apartment. I felt very uncertain of what my future was, and it was very tough on everyone involved. There were a lot of ups and downs – the worst was when I had my cardiac arrest then we had to put the process on hold so I could recover. Then to top it all off it felt like the NDIS didn’t care.

A week before we were to go to the AAT hearing the NDIS approved funding for my apartment; a 1-bedroom high physical support apartment.

I am really looking forward to my independence, my apartment will provide me with what most people deserve.
